The main objectives of the laboratory aim to increase the understanding of infectious diseases and of their control through the identification of the causative agents for human infections, the study of epidemiological markers of active infections, and the epidemiological surveillance of their virulence factors.
The laboratory conducts tests for the identification of a wide range of viral infections, such as those caused by respiratory viruses, herpes viruses, enteroviruses, etc., and for the monitoring of the intensity of the immune response.
The testing makes use of all diagnostic methods at our disposal, including viral culture and direct viral antigen detection, infectious disease serology, nucleic acid amplification techniques, and sequencing technologies.
